“A man’s heart plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

I am a businesswoman. I’ve owned and operated multiple businesses for almost 30 years. I know how to plan. I know how to set goals. I’ve been to tons of seminars on how to succeed. And yet, NO PLAN I could ever concoct on my own would be as good as God’s. In fact, it pales in comparison.

The world will tell us, “Fail to plan and plan to fail.” Thank goodness God does not hold our planning skills over our heads, because the truth is God’s ways are higher and different than ours. No human is able to know precisely what is to come or how to perfectly plan things in such a way that we cruise ahead without any bumps in life!

So, how do we navigate His plan? How do we know which way to turn when the bumps do come?

Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;” I love this picture! The sheep only know the voice of the shepherd because they are familiar with him. They spend time with him, they’ve felt the crook of his staff guiding them back in the right direction, they rely on him for daily food, water, and the right pasture.

When we get to know God, we begin to understand His ways more.

Wives, have you ever gotten back to the house and your husband isn’t home? Let’s say he didn’t tell you where he was. Most of us would have three good guesses about our husband’s whereabouts because we KNOW his ways and patterns. Mine would be at a local coffee shop, walking on the Swamp Rabbit Trail, or finding another electronic gadget at Best Buy. I KNOW him.

When we KNOW God, we are aware of His opinion on things, what the Word says about certain situations, and how He might respond. God’s plan for our lives, from who we connect with to our livelihood and how we raise our children, becomes more evident as we talk to Him and get to know Him.

*Sometimes, “pennies in your path” show up when you need to trust God with your plans.

P.S.

Question: What is an area in your life that you have planned for and haven’t asked God his opinion on? What would it look like if you did? Perhaps the path looks a little different than you thought.

Growing Deeper-

One Action Step: Write three goals for the year. Ask God if they are your goals or His. When your heart aligns with God’s, your goals are likely both yours and God’s because the Lord often “gives us the desires of our heart” (meaning births them in us) for His purposes and His glory. If you don’t know, then ask.

Jeremiah 33 says, “Ask of me, and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things you do not know.” It doesn’t say, “Ask of me, and I won’t answer.”
